Rodrigo Olarte (MS-August 2007)
Rodrigo Olarte completed his MS degree in plant pathology at Cornell University with Keith Perry and Stewart Gray in August, 2007. Rod studied the Transmission Efficiency of Potato Virus Y. In the past decade, Potato virus Y has become a greater problem in potato production due to the emergence of new strains of the virus. Rod is currently working in the laboratory of Terry Delaney in the Department of Biology at the University of Vermont.
Evan Johnson (PhD-August 2007)
Evan Johnson recently completed his Ph.D. degree in Plant Pathology, under the direction of Rosemary Loria and Donna Gibson. His thesis was entitled "Biosyntheis of plant cell wall-induced thaxtomin and nitric oxide in plant pathogenic Streptomyces spp.". His work demonstrated for the first time that bacterial nitric oxide synthase releases nitric oxide; these enzymes are truncated homologs of mammalian NOSs and are highly conserved in a subset of prokaryotes. Since nitric oxide is a potent signalling molecule in plants and animals, Evan's work has implications for pathobiology and microbial ecology. Evan will be working as a postdoctoral scientist at the University of Florida, Citrus Research and Education Center (CREC) in Lake Alfred, FL. He will continue to pursue research in bacterial virulence.
Paola Zuluaga (MS -May 2007)
Paola Zuluaga received her MS degree in Plant Pathology at Cornell University in May 2007 under the direction of Dr. William Fry. Her thesis was entitled "Molecular assessment of BTH treatment in petunia, potato and tomato". She will continue to pursue a Ph.D. under Fry's guidance with the tentative title of her thesis as "The role of genes induced by treatment of tomato and petunia with BTH on Induction of Systemic Acquired Resistance."

Sofia Windstam (PhD-May 2007)
Sofia Windstam received a Ph.D. degree in May from the Department of Plant Pathology at Cornell University under the direction of Eric Nelson. Her thesis was titled “Influence of fatty acids and sugar released by germinating seeds on plant species specific control of Pythium ultimum by Enterobacter cloaceae”. She studied early fatty acid signalling events in Pythium seed infections and the interference of pathogenesis by E. cloacae. She showed that E. cloacae metabolizes fatty acids as early as 15 min after seeds are sown in soil and that the presence of sugars in the seed exudates from some plant species can repress fatty acid metabolism in the spermosphere. This may explain the failure of biological control on some plant species. Sofia is currently a post doctoral scientist in the laboratory of Mary Hausbeck at Michigan State University studying the biology and management of Phytophthora capsici on peppers.
Kathy Munkvold (PhD – January 2007)
Kathy Munkvold received a Ph.D. degree in January 2007 from the Department of Plant Pathology at Cornell University under the direction of Alan Collmer. The title of her thesis was "Characterization of the conserved Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000 effector protein, HopAA1-1." She discovered that HopAA1-1 acts in a domain-specific manner to kill both yeast and plant cells and that 25% of the effectors in the DC3000 effector repertoire appear to affect broadly conserved eukaryotic cellular processes as indicated by toxic effects when expressed in yeast. Kathy is currently a postdoctoral scientist in the laboratory of Gregory Martin at The Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research, where she is studying plant targets of the DC3000 effector AvrPtoB.
